Nitza Tufiño is a multidisciplinary artist and the only female founding member of the pioneering Nuyorican graphic workshop Taller Boricua, an organization established in East Harlem in 1970. Her voracious exploration of materials is on display in this selection of artworks, created using a range of domestic materials including textiles, cut paper, and even the canisters of basic pantry staples. The installation Clothesline Homage appropriates from an element
of the home, dividing the exhibition space with a line from which five multicolored banners hang like clothing set out to dry. Each double-sided piece features family photographs, including images
of her father, the acclaimed Puerto Rican artist Rafael Tufiño, as well as a tender image of the young artist with her grandmother in the courtyard of their home, a clothesline visible just behind them. Collaged and embroidered with machine-drawn stitching and vibrant designs in crayon, similar vintage photographs provide the source material for her related and more recent series exhibited on adjacent walls. These on-going works represent different chapters in Tufiño’s daily life as well as references to her family’s spiritual
practices. Created using cut-paper, a traditional craft reflecting Tufiño’s Mexican heritage on her mother’s side, they evoke linens hanging from clothes hangers in a closet.
