Green's Pottery kiln can be seen in the background of this 1865 view of Lower Fore Street in Lambeth, London, with housing and the boatbuilders' premises of R.Bain on the left. Fore Street ran alongside the Thames between Vauxhall Gardens and Lambeth Palace; at the time, Lambeth had become a densely populated industrial area with overcrowding and poverty; residents of this Lambeth neighbourhood lived in filthy, cheaply built houses. Tenants had no choice but to drink from the Thames because there was no indoor plumbing or standpipes in the streets. In the late 1860s, the houses were demolished to make way for the Albert Embankment. 📷️: Hulton Archive 1865 #GettyImages #PreservingThePast #GettyArchive #oldlondon #lambeth #streetphotography #londonlife #thisislondon #londonhistory #urbanphotography #19thcentury #19thcenturyphotography #historicpreservation #victorianengland #victorianhistory #shootingthepast #historyphoto #historyphotographed #nostalgia #archivephoto #photoarchive #vintagephoto #photolibrary #heritage
