Bringing these images back to life, contextualizing them as artworks to open up a new kind of investigation: What is the line between cold utilitarianism and artistic expression? Is it the photographer who decides, the curator or the public? Marcel De Baer (b. 1922 d. 2014) was a collision investigator in the 1960s and 70s in Belgium. The only investigator assigned to a sizable district, he collected a significant number of files for the jurisdiction. His job was to determine how an accident happened and who was at fault 👀 He left behind an enormous body of work, initially presented as cold hard fact, and later appreciated for its artistic qualities and cultural commentary. Erik Bulckens is a mixed media artist based in Brussels. He holds a Master’s Degree in Experimental Film and Video. In 2014, Buclkens discovered the archive of 10,000+ photos shot by his grandfather, the work struck him as incredibly artistic while it was primarily utilitarian. He began scanning the photographs and sharing the images online. Fellowship was founded in 2021 by a group of artists, collectors and thought leaders across art, photography and Web3.
