This week's #WritersRoutine is with Allegra Goodman, author of SAM, this month's @readwithjenna book club pick! Where and when do you write? I write in a small sunny study with a wonderful desk containing drawers for stamps, cards, pens, and scraps of paper with notes to myself. But if I'm honest, I do some of my best work in my parked car (swipe for photo). When I really need to concentrate I type offline with my laptop propped against the steering wheel. If my computer runs out of battery I'll write by hand. If you look closely you can see a bottle of White Out. This is a relic from the days my kids needed to make last minute corrections on homework. I also kept in my car -- spare ballet slippers, hairpins, and tights, extra snacks, water bottles, pencils, and note cards. Now it's just me and the book I am writing. On a typical day I'll swim laps and then spend the morning writing new pages. After lunch I'll revise what I did in the morning. In the late afternoon I'll walk to the library or a coffee shop and either revise for a third time or work on something else--a story or essay. Then I'll come home and cook dinner. I'm not good for much at night, but I usually jot down a few notes to plan my next scene. I got into this habit when my kids were small and I could only work in the morning. I discovered that if I wrote notes at night, I could hold onto my story's thread until the next day. Lastly, this is the lucky chair I keep in my study. I bought it at an antique shop in Beverly MA where I wrote Sam--and where she grows up. The chair was covered with dust but I cleaned it up.
