✋🏽You can’t really understand how a clay work is made until you touch it. Ideally you would pick it up and look at the foot. That’s why I love going to auction houses to feel the weight of ancient Chinese porcelains or to artist’s studios. I found out that Toshiko Takaezu’s works ware very huggable, but are all also musical— the small and large ones have small balls of clay inside, so if you shake them, they rattle. I definitely couldn’t have done that to her works I saw at the @metmuseum last week. 🤍 Thank you @toshikotakaezufoundation for sharing Toshiko’s work and life with us and Don Fletcher for answering my technical questions! The satin cone 10 glazes felt amazing! 🤍 I’m really looking forward to the traveling #toshikotakaezu show that the @noguchimuseum and @toshikotakaezufoundation are working on for 2024. With the current popularity of ceramics as a medium and renewed interest by artists of color, it’s about time that people learn about this legacy of artists of color who created visionary work.
