In some ways Demeter was seen as a mother of the many a care taker of the realm. Should a group of individuals scorn her by attacking others she held dear she could in her own fury deplete their crops and make them suffer from famine and disease at the wisp of her breath. All in the same could torture them with growing hunger and drive them mad.
