The reality is that growing up brown in America is not easy. I was a child when I knew that to survive, I’d have to learn to code-switch. I was a teenager when I tried to severe my native tongue. As an adult, I’m only beginning to find pages that detail the stories of my ancestors and culture in the ashes of the libraries I burned. I've lost count of the number of times I’ve been told to go back to my own country. I’ve stopped romanticizing the people who praise the vocabulary I use because I finally sound white enough for them.
