So long Blue Whale Summer!
While we are now beginning to see Humpback, Minke, and Fin Whales here in San Diego, we’re officially declaring it the end of Blue Whale season. It’s certainly possible that more Blues will be seen occasionally in the Fall (especially on extended tours), the vast majority of these giants have moved on to parts unknown! It was easily the best Blue Whale season in our local waters in nearly a decade, with consistent sightings lingering into early September! Most Blue Whale seasons in San Diego’s local waters have a short and intense peak during the month of June through early to mid July, and everything after that is a bonus.
This year we saw Blue Whales on 100% or our extended style tours (not shortened by weather) running between May 23rd and August 20th, and our local 2.5 hour tours saw Blues on better than 70% of the tours run in that same window with June being nearly 90% successful! Those are by far the best numbers in our area! We had too many incredible moments to name them all here, but this curious baby in the video above sure was a highlight!
If Blue Whales are on your bucket list, we’d strongly recommend grabbing tickets to one of our extended blue whale trips in June of 2023, as that will be the closest thing you’ll get to a guaranteed Blue Whale sighting anywhere in the world! Tickets for those special Blue Whale trips sold out months in advance last year, so don’t miss out! Link is in our bio to book!
