Has there ever been a courier quite like Two Dogs? As of 8pm tonight, the intrepid salt carrying our Lightest Footprint knits from Geelong to Sydney is closing in on Eden on the New South Wales coast. The journey has been 54 hours so far. In his engineless boat, Ratu, @teamtwodogs is sailing into headwinds (a norwester) but says he has a blood red moon on the horizon, as well as the promise of much-needed sleep. Braving winds up to 40 knots, Two Dogs spent yesterday afternoon and last night threading his way through oil and gas platforms in lumpy, moonlit seas off Bairnsdale on the north end of the Bass Strait. It took most of this morning for Two Dogs to escape the grasp of the Bass canyon edge, an abyss that drains Bass Strait to the east, dropping rapidly from a depth of 100m to 4000m. Two Dogs had a perilous moment when, perched on the bow hanking in the storm jib, his boat got knocked down by waves. Thankfully he was well tethered to the boat. His spirits were raised by a humpback whale some distance off, who, in the words of Two Dogs, “exploded vertically out of a wave, exalting in its moment of flight. With that as inspiration I crawled forward and got on with the job, making slow and deliberate movements, like a rock climber.” Follow his journey via the live tracker at @teamtwodogs
