🤎Black ballerinas have a particularly challenging experience in the ballet world (based off of my current experiences) but so do black male dancers. Especially when it comes down to having opportunities to choreograph for white ballet companies. The classical ballets like Sleeping beauty, Swan Lake, and Giselle only include Eurocentric narratives or they appropriate other cultures. What we do not see on stage are inclusive narratives (inclusive of pretty much any narrative outside of Europe by people of color) or even music often times. I’m so happy for Andile Ndlovu. He faced impossible circumstances leading up to the show yet still he rose. (Literally staying up till 1 am at the theater to work on lighting the night before the show🤯) His perseverance is actually the most inspirational thing I’ve ever seen. His ballet B1 was commissioned last year, and was expanded and premiered on the main stage last night. The entire cast put all there efforts in and it showed. B1 received a standing ovation. 👀In my entire experience as a professional dancer I’ve never seen an audience go crazy like that. It was like a rock concert. 😂Congratulations Andile. 🥇I’m excited to be apart of your journey and for your new piece that premiers in October.
