Comedy was my route into an impenetrable and homogenous industry- when I was just couldn’t catch a break in the mainstream acting world, comedy was always there keeping me fresh and weird, from @battleacts which we started straight out of drama school and has endured for more than a decade, forming the basis of a rock-solid friendship group, to The Matey Institute who took me to festivals all over the country, to @eggcomedy which has just transformed my life in terms of creativity, ownership, representation and opportunity... it’s not an exaggeration to say that live comedy has been the foundations on which I was able to form a career, and now it is massively under threat. The UK government’s emergency arts package EXCLUDES live comedy, and now 78% of live comedy venues face permanent closure in the next year. These are venues that cultivate the talent you see on your tv’s, the bread and butter and birthing places for the comics who have got you through lockdown.
