Category is..... The Mane Event! Love your hair hope you win! Alongside my sister @bby.ldn In this weeks episode I spoke about my insecurities with my hair texture since I was a child. Growing up I noticed that hair texture was such a big deal in the black community and just as colourism it sickens me to my stomach. ALL black hair types are beautiful; and we seriously need to bin this “nice hair” stigma. Because my hair texture was considered nappy I couldn’t grow it pass the length of my finger nail and the minute the sides grew too long, curled up and resembled “black peppercorns” it was time for a shape up. I remember putting texturiser and chemicals in my hair to make it look “more presentable. Truth is no matter what I did my hair would not resemble that of someone with genetically born with looser curls. I have literally worn this wig out several times and ppl came up to me and complimented my hair texture; a completely different reaction to when I have my natural Afro out. Then there are those that know it’s not my hair and stare because they think it’s impossible for someone with my dark shade to have this hair texture. Filming the show, I was very insecure having my natural hair out in the confessionals because once again that fear was there that it wasn’t presentable for television. Due to this, I decided to wear a wig as if it was my hair in confessionals and even in the werkroom. I have certainly learned to embrace my hair now that am older; however, I am not fully where I need to be yet but my confidence is getting better. For anyone who knows me I have been performing on the drag scene in braids (protective styles) and this is deliberate as I have decided at this point I will be proud of my roots and show it in my drag. Although I own a few, I could care less for a human wig. I don’t care to fit it nor will I try to be that girl who thinks flowy hair sells a fantasy.
