We have been raised to believe only in the individual. “There is a sense that ‘something is missing’ - but no appreciation that this mysterious, missing enjoyment can only be accessed beyond the pleasure principle”. In late capitalism we are left alone, “Falling into anhedonic lassitude”. Isolated, yet the feeling of constantly being watched lurks at the back of our minds.
Self-expression is now a capitalist commodity, a selling point to push more products to the consumer. The digital landscape presents itself as the platform of individualistic self-promotion. We become our own brand - desperately trying to communicate our individual narrative to anyone who will listen. The language we speak is visual. Making photographs invisible as social media makes them inherently forgettable and unspectacular. To die young in the age of individualism.
