As my college running career comes to a close, here’s my advice to those just entering or in the midst of it all:
1. Don’t ever let your well-being come at the cost of your career. There’s so much more to you than your college running career, so be kind to yourself.
2. Create meaningful relationships. And not just those with teammates, coaches and athletic staff, but to and with people outside of running. A breath of fresh air and a joyful view of life beyond running.
3. Nobody cares. I spent so much (too much) of my career thinking about how I look or how others perceive me, but in reality nobody cares. Nobody knows what anyone has gone through to be where they are now. And that’s the sad truth of college athletics.
I’ve had my share of highs and lows, and none would be possible without college athletics. But in all honesty, I’m burnt out, exhausted and need to rekindle my relationship with running. I’ll be back soon. So be kind to yourself and check in with your teammates.
thanks for making it out to my last college race, 📸: @jkh_photo
