Black space shall blackappoint you...What color is value? Thinking back to past projects today. 'A Way, Away (Listen While I Say)' a durational, multi-phased public artwork began in April 2017 by shrouding a building which had been slated for demolition with gold paint. As part of a yearlong joint commission by the Pulitzer Arts Foundation and Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts (PXSTL), collaborator Andres L. Hernandez (@signifyingmonk) invited neighborhood stakeholders and building resident, Bruno David Gallery to offer the final ceremonial marking of the structure. We called this phase MARKING. Mark making is one of the most primal forms of communication. It is also a gesture that artists and designers have explored and contemplated for centuries. How could this act of marking the building in gold signal complicated associations we make between value, color, property and ownership? Gold bricks have been a long standing part of my process.
