THE GREAT DEBATE...fashion season is upon us and as the shows start to do their rounds on the continent we ask this question - is there such a thing as African Fashion? Being put into a box is not always a bad thing so instead of feeling like we can't get out,why can't it be our way of keeping others from getting in? So much of our culture and traditions are lost through cultural appropriation,through the corruption of our value systems, through subliminal messaging that still makes us feel as though our ways are somehow not 'good' enough... Labelling and naming is a way to claim ownership and 'African' should not be seen as taking anything away from us,it is actually something to be proud of. Our textiles,our processes,the hands that make,our tools,our history,our culture...we have to hold onto with all our might so we never again lose the right to tell our stories in our way and not the way the rest of the world wants to hear them or tell them...
