Using the Game Boy Camera in 2022 Digital cameras are a given in the era of smartphones. But before we had high definition cameras built into our iPhones there was the Game Boy Camera. Released in 1998, the accessory, along with the Game Boy Printer which printed out photos on thermal receipt paper, was most peoples foray into digital photography. Affordable and easy to use the camera was accessible to even the most novice photographers. The fixed lens camera was built into a regular game cartridge which simply plugged into the console like any other game. While the 0.014MP camera system was nothing to shout about (just 128 x 112 pixels) it offered users a new, fun way to interact with the Game Boy. Despite this, the camera has gained a cult following amongst nostalgic fans over the years, who appreciate charms of its blocky pixellated output. Pages like @expired_film_club regularly show off the original camera in all its four-colour greyscale glory, while many young fans have been choosing the technology as an alternative to that sharp images typically captured on smartphones - take for instance the guy who shot a 100Geks show using the OG device - to impressive effect. Perhaps one of the most impressive uses of the Game Boy Camera though are those who have hacked the stock camera. @conorsev07 used a 3D-printed adapter to fit a Canon DSLR lens to the camera, an upgrade that allows for more zoom for better long-range shots over the stock wide-angle lens. The results are perfect for the drifting content he shared on his page earlier this year. Much like Polaroid cameras, the Game Boy Camera offers a similar nostalgic aesthetic that many of us crave in todays social media era where everything is filtered and overly edited. The low-resolution 2-but images have a charming aesthetic, particularly in the green shades of the original Game Boy screen.
