When I lived in Paris, I used to stop by the l’Eglise Saint Roch on my way to the Tuileries to sit and ponder things—as a young(er) man does—and one day met a Spanish woman who was cleaning the marble steps around St. Anthony’s shrine. Over time, I realized that she was leaving ephemeral designs with her cleaning: crosses, stars, and dot patterns etched in time, a gesture of both service and perhaps penance, as the work was hard. Today, I stopped in and was relieved to see that some of her patterns remain untouched after all this time.
