Color is everything to me. You can’t just say ‘black’– which one? ‘What Black is This, You Say?’ is a multi-platform project conceived on June 2, 2020, otherwise known as Blackout Tuesday. What began as a spontaneous challenge to the Instagram trend has since taken on new forms, most recently as a first-of-its-kind, year-long collaboration with the Storefront for Art and Architecture (learn more at link in bio). Looking back one year later, on the first Juneteenth to be recognized as a federal holiday. I’m struck by just how quickly gestures of performance are embraced in lieu of a careful societal examination and commitment to undoing the injustices that led to a ‘Juneteenth’ in the first place. I’d trade one million Juneteenth Federal holidays (or a month of Sundays) for Congressional passage of H.R. 40, 40 acres, the mule, reversals of restrictive covenants, land grants, contract buying, redlining, segregation, graytowns, white privilege. What black IS this? What do YOU say? What Black is this, you say? #blackspaceshallblackappointyou #whatblackisthisyousay #juneteenth @storefrontnyc @rhonahoffmangallery
