It’s not enough to be “not-racist”. With racist voices are as emboldened as they are, opposing voices must be louder and decidedly anti-racist. This means understanding that the privilege white men benefit from in every facet of life comes at the expense of others’ freedom. It means that having uncomfortable conversations with family, friends and colleagues about race is not an option, it is a necessity. It means that we as white men must look in the mirror and silence the parts of our ego that bristle at being lumped in with “those white people”, and to understand that we don’t understand. Only then can we begin to offer our help in the monumental task of dismantling the systemic racism that rots at the heart of America.
