Gustav Klimt, 'Farm Garden with Sunflowers, 1907
For many artists, the 19th century represented a return to nature and a focus on freedom of expression. Giving up staid academic notions of what constituted art, artists ventured en plein air (outdoors) and painted to recreate the landscape. Rather than previous idealised depictions of nature, artists aimed to paint nature as they experienced it, with the observational style proving seminal to the impressionist movement later that century.
