All I heard for years was that traveling with a baby is impossible, but Archie has now been to Switzerland, Greece, Hawaii, LA, Whistler and Lake Louise all before his first birthday. It’s definitely a lot more work to travel with a baby, but it’s completely doable (and a lot of fun!). Here are a few of the biggest logistical changes I’ve noticed when traveling with a little one:
-I try to only book direct flights. If a connecting flight is the only option, then we stay a couple nights in the city we are flying through.
-I start the packing process a week in advance (and less luggage space for me now 🤭).
-I try to book flights as far in advance as possible for the best seating options.
-It’s A LOT of luggage – 2 large checked bags, two carry-on rollers, two backpacks, a diaper bag, a car seat (in a case) and a stroller.
-Infants under two fly for free as a lap baby, so I book an Aisle and Window seat for us if we are flying Economy,,and hope that the middle stays empty. If it’s a long haul flight, I check the seating chart every few weeks and if it looks like the flight is filling up, I consider buying the middle seat for Archie. It’s so much easier to fly in three seats vs two seats.
-We get to the airport three hours before a flight instead of two hours before a flight.
-Most airlines have a special family line for check-in, and let you board before most of the seating groups.
-Proximity to some sort of laundry or laundry service is now crucial when choosing a hotel or Airbnb.
-Days are planned around naps and meals, so 7 AM sightseeing adventures are usually no longer an option.
