What’s in my healthy home 🏡 + Plastic-free serveware— We naturally use plates, bowls, and cups that are ceramic or glass; but the stuff marketed for kids is often virgin plastic or even worse, recycled, “plant-based” or “bio” plastic (i’m looking at you bamboo and wheat straw plastic) 👀 The two main issues with plastics are microplastics and the harmful chemicals that leach out of plastic. There is really only so much we can do as most of our food, even whole food ingredients, come wrapped in plastic. Overtime I’ve collected low/no-plastic serveware items for my kids, as well as glass food-storage containers for our household. I’m not worried about the lids being plastic as no food/drinks are in contact with or heated in plastic. Laundry— Your laundry detergent is almost always on your skin via your clothes, bedding, towels, etc. so it’s one of the first products I recommend swapping in your home! Cleaning Products— This is key for me especially with a baby crawling on the floor and putting everything in her mouth. There’s only so much I can control, but I feel good knowing that the stuff I use to clean my floors, is safe enough to wash my fruit with (and I do)! I’ve been using the same cleaning solution since 2018 and it simplifies everything. Candles– Nothing feels better than lighting a pretty candle after you just cleaned your space (just me?) However, candles and synthetic fragrance can compromise the air quality in your home. Unscented beeswax candles are the best, but I personally love a scent so I look for beeswax candles made with organic/wild-crafted essential oils. Bedding– You spend 1/3 of your life in your bed and sleep is when your body heals and rejuvenates. Yet unfortunately, mattresses and bed linens are often made from synthetic materials (like plastic) and are treated with chemicals that cause off-gassing as you sleep 😩 Organic mattresses and beddings can be incredibly expensive. If you’re not in the place to replace everything you sleep on, prioritize bedding made with natural fibers (cotton, linen, wool, silk) and wash them in a laundry detergent made without irritants and synthetic fragrances. Everything is linked in my bio 🌿
