When I found out about these cables carrying the Internet between Europe and America I remember how strange the information felt. What I’d imagined as intangible, as up in the cloud, was suddenly collapsed into something very physical. On one hand it was as simple as two-cans-and-a-piece-of-string and on the other almost impossible to grasp.
This feeling, a combination of the straight forward and the deeply mysterious, is something I also experience around the ocean. It’s here that the work began, with questions about how the ocean and the Internet speak to each other and to us. Both are massively extended in space and time, do strange things to how we think and feel about our bodies, and show us that boundaries we imagine as solid are, in fact, fluid and porous.
This installation, from ‘Known and Strange Things Pass’, is on show in Arles until 25th September as part of ‘Songs of the Sky’, a group show curated by Kathrin Schonegg.
