5 years ago today I landed in Nome Alaska about to set sail for 2 months in an attempt to be the first sailboat to sail to the North Pole.
Both of the yachts were not ice breakers, so definitely had some risk to the expedition but it was the best crew and boats for the job. Waking up every day to the ice pack was an unreal experience. With 24hrs of sunlight for weeks on end time didn't end up meaning anything and the days lasted what felt like forever, it was amazing.
Unfortunately we didn't get to the pole, but we got closer than anyone before us who had tried in similar boats, we got some really important science experiments done in a place no one has done them before, we set some records, and sailed in a sea no one has ever freely sailed in before (as the ice has retreated so much we could actually sail freely in it). It was an incredible journey and I have SO many photos that still haven't seen the light of day, maybe one day I'Il do something with them.
I can't believe it has been 5 years! What a journey! I miss most of the gang, and hope that one day soon I can get back to Alaska to see Erik, Krystina, Frances, Fukimi and the boats again!
