Boo-Hooray is proud to present our 38th shortlist, gathering ephemera and zines from the early works of Beth and Scott B, Lydia Lunch, and Richard Kern. The four were central figures in the development of No Wave visual and narrative aesthetics. Working in the context of New York's late-70s downtown urban abandonment, No Wave artists were concerned with frank and discomforting aestheticization of violence, sex, and drug use amongst the growing cohort of those living at the margins of American society. No Wave matured concurrently with and in contrast to the more glitzy and commercial New Wave, and was the earliest example of the art world cracked open by punk. Gathered here are four of Kern's earliest zines, examples of the DIY self-publishing with which he began his career; a scarce issue of Tommy Turner's REDRUM; posters advertising screenings of work by Beth and Scott B at long-gone downtown hubs of moving image culture; and two of the most enduring images produced by the movement: Lung Leg on the cover of Evol and wrestling with Lydia Lunch in Kern's film Fingered, respectively.
