Meet 2022 Joan Mitchell Fellow Rocío Rodríguez, a painter who lives and works in Atlanta, GA. Rodríguez writes: “My work encompasses a worldview that embraces differences, oppositions, and contradictions. I have always been interested in the paradoxical, creating a space within my work where images are not fixed—a place where visual tension exists, presenting a balancing act between stasis and movement. Some shapes float or hover while others are anchored to an edge. Boxes of color are stacked or placed within my compositions as they begin to vanish or unfold.” Rodríguez has exhibited in over thirty solo exhibitions in private art galleries, museums, and contemporary art centers, in addition to numerous curated group exhibitions in the United States. She has had two major retrospective exhibitions: at The Columbus Museum, Columbus, GA (2012) and at MOCAGA, Atlanta (2019). Her work is in a number of public collections, including the High Museum of Art, the Huntsville Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, in addition to numerous private collections. Rodríguez is the recipient of a Cintas Foundation Fellowship, a “Southern Regional” Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome, two SAF/NEA fellowships, an Artadia Award, and an Anonymous Was a Woman Award, in addition to a residency at Marfa Contemporary, Marfa, TX (2014).
