Installation view of PM Magazine, 1982⁠ ⁠ A rhythmic collage of TV visuals and pop music across 5 channels, PM Magazine was originally commissioned by Documenta 7. It was the only video work in this edition of Documenta which became known for its celebration of a return to painting and sculpture. ⁠ ⁠ Like other Birnbaum works from this time, PM Magazine appropriates TV footage and turns it back on itself, in this case, offering a pointed critique of corporate fantasies around consumerism and leisure. ⁠ ⁠ PM Magazine is on view in the first US retrospective of Dara Birnbaum at the Hessel Museum through November 27th.
