As a kid I used to spend a lot of time at my grandparents’. My grandfather Lucas is an avid art enthusiast and collector, their walls are full of beautiful work by many amazing artists. Only a few paintings however, made a profound impact on me. They were the works of my uncle Ramses. They were big, immersive paintings resembling surreal worlds with many hidden symbols and characters, so intriguing to me I could stare at them for ages. As we were recording ‘Sahar’ I felt like the songs conjured up an in-between realm (just before dawn). Listening back to them they put me in a reflective state of mind, much like the work of my uncle did. It made me think a work of his would be a beautiful extension to the world of the album. He hadn’t painted for a while but when I gave him some early versions of the studio recordings and asked him to make something for the record he immediately started working. A couple of weeks later he invited me to his atelier where I once again was drawn into that state of reflection looking at the beautiful, hypnotizing work he had made. He is one of the most talented persons I know, was a big example for me growing up, (he even taught me my first guitar chords!) and I’m so grateful to have his work and mine connected in the artwork of ‘Sahar’. Thank you Ramses! Picture on 2nd slide made by my mother of a teenage Ramses somewhere in the 80’s
