Had so much fun choreographing this piece. It was an honor to work on a number celebrating the legacy of Joséphine Baker & all the wonderful black female performers who came after her. What I love about Joséphine is how she mixed, connected and embodied all the cultures she was a part of: Black, American, European. How she grew more powerful with each stereotype she subverted, each wrong perception she manipulated through her “danse sauvage”, and beyond. While working on this number, rather than let the fear of inadequacy take over, I gave myself permission to pull from different parts of my own artistic, ethnic, cultural and training background, just as I’d like to think Joséphine has done back in her time. But this performance would not be what it is today without the amazing @lana.kai.fox - without her determination, skill, and strength, without HER culture and heritage. Thank you for trusting me entirely, for taking it to the next level and carrying it out brilliantly. For representing your culture fiercely and unapologetically. I love seeing you receive standing ovations across the world, from London to Los Angeles. I hope you feel proud of yourself. And I can only imagine how proud of you the previous generations are. 👏🏼✨🏆 This video was taken at the London Palladium, the same stage and one of the last places Joséphine performed in 1974. Honor is an understatement. Thank you again to @ditavonteese and @catherinedlish for your trust in me, my expertise, skill, and opinion. None of this would’ve happened without you. Your attention to detail, quality, accuracy and inclusivity is inspiring and appreciated. To see this performance and many more, check out the Glamonatrix Tour dates at Dita.net/shows
