Marrakech’s Le Jardin Majorelle was first created in 1923, an Arabesque cactus garden with zellij fountains, native palms and a distinct shade of indigo - now patented as “Bleu Majorelle.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ French architect Paul Sinoir built a looming, cubist riad overlooking the garden, which Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé would later call home. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The eccentric art nouveau gardens were otherworldly, and the electric blue house was a unique refuge from the world outside the outer walls: that not only of contrasting red clay, and the snake charmer-exotica in Djemaa El Fna, but of the increasingly chaotic western world beyond.
