37 years ago today, David Bowie (@davidbowie) and Mick Jagger (@mickjagger) began a four-week reign at the top of the UK singles chart with their version of Martha and the Vandellas' 1964 hit "Dancing In The Street." However, this wasn't necessarily where the star-crossed collaborators initially intended for the cover to go. Recorded over the course of a thirteen-hour session at Abbey Road Studios in June 1985 with all proceeds of the single benefitting Live Aid famine relief, the track and music video were just the beginning of the English duo's unlikely brainchild. Although the original plan, which entailed the two performing live together via satellite with a stream of Bowie at London's Wembley Stadium and Jagger at Philadelphia's John F. Kennedy Stadium, would ultimately be debunked by the realization of an unavoidable, half-second satellite link-up delay. Nevertheless, the chart-topping single would still go on to be revered as one of the greatest collaborations in music history. — Ph.
