(Repost @design.emergency) “I backed off completely from industry,” says the Dutch designer Hella Jongerius in a Design Emergency interview with our co-founder Alice Rawsthorn on the values that define her work in design. Hella, one of the most dynamic and influential designers of our time, describes how and why she designed products and spaces on an industrial scale for IKEA, KLM, Vitra and other global brands, and why she has stopped doing so. “I really believe in making small steps and trying to change from within, and that was always my goal in working in industry,” she said. "If you make changes in industry, the result is so big, so much bigger than making a one-off object or a smaller collection.” "But I find the steps too small, not only in terms of sustainability, but the whole capitalistic thinking of design, producing, selling and this whole branding shit. I couldn’t bear it, so now I use other platforms, like museum exhibitions, to dive into products and to find the cultural layers within an object. I can communicate much better in this new realm.” You can watch Hella’s interview with Alice on her design values on Design Emergency’s video channel here: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CfofYmFoXU7/ #design #designemergency #hellajongerius @hellajongerius #jongeriuslab @alice.rawsthorn #alicerawsthorn #designvalues Images: 1.
