Amarise Carreras @mabi_moon_ is a photo-based artist who incorporates performance and collaborative practices in their work. Drawing on traditions and knowledge passed down by their bisabuela (great-grandmother), they create altar-like tableaus using common household objects, fruits, spices, and other natural materials. Constructed in the studio, these ephemeral installations are documented in Carreras’s carefully composed photographs, whose rich, saturated tones evoke a painterly quality. Color and texture are highlighted through the placement of each of the elements, which bear deep personal, cultural, and spiritual symbolism, as well as bodily associations. Liquids are poured, fruits are squeezed, and flower petals are cupped by hands which enter the compositional frame in offering. In a previous performance, actual oranges were used to anoint Her winds and tides bring figures home, whose poetic title reflects Carrera’s reverence for Boricua women. Framed in a found door adorned with oyster shells, the stains of this offering remain visible.
