Before the Curry Mile was the Curry Mile there was Sanam - the only curry house in Rusholme. It’s quite possible that without it, we wouldn’t have the famous Curry Mile at all! 🍴 The restaurant was founded by current owner Abdul Akhrar’s father, Abdul Ghafoor, in 1968. Sanam has survived the test of time, thriving and expanding into other sites in Longsight and Cheetham Hill, as well as Oldham and Bradford. They’ve seen off their share of recessions and of course, a recent pandemic. None of the restaurants that were founded around it in the 70s remain - the closed being the likes of Shere Khan which first opened in the late 80s. Abdul’s not sure who will take over from him, but hopes the business will stay in the family. We hope Sanam will continue serving up delicious food for another 60 years!
