The Broad is thrilled to welcome teachers and students back to the museum for in-person visits and two programs designed for engagement with its permanent collection!
In Art+Story (grades 3–6), visiting classes will work with Broad collection favorites including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Barbara Kruger, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui, Jeff Koons, Robert Therrien, and Roy Lichtenstein, in addition to new artworks and artists recently added to the collection.
Art+(Re)Telling (grades 7–12) invites students to explore themes present in the exhibition, William Kentridge: In Praise of Shadows, including finding joy in the process of creation, making meaning through collaborative creation and the use of language, as well as the ongoing impact of colonialism and entrenched power dynamics in Kentridge’s home country of South Africa and here in Los Angeles.
Vital to Kentridge’s work is the retelling of stories and history to allow for a more complex and inclusive accounting of the past. Through his creative practice, Kentridge seeks to empower the voices of those not permitted to be authors of history. As educators in the United States confront issues of censorship and books being banned in schools, The Broad’s William Kentridge: In Praise of Shadows offers students opportunities to create and affirm their own narratives and truths regarding history, identity, and race.
