“When the cyclone came, I was inside. I didn’t want to leave my house. I just stayed home.” As the cyclone intensified, Susan realized her family was no longer safe. “[The wind] pulled out one of the bamboo walls on the side and so we ran down to the safe house and stayed there.”
“When I came out in the morning and I saw my house, I felt terrible. I was devastated because my house fell down, but I said thank you to God because no one in my community lost their life.” Susan’s family home was destroyed when Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Harold tore across her home country of Vanuatu on April 6, 2020.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worked with @shelterboxusa to donate and distribute tool kits on the ground in Vanuatu. Susan assisted with dividing up distributions to her community and relaying messages. When the tarpaulins arrived, she ensured that all the people with a disability and the widows were taken care of first, to provide them a dry place to sleep. Despite having her home completely destroyed, Susan ensured the well-being of others in her community before herself.
One of the community leaders finally said to her, “You take this one and use it for your children, because your house has fallen down. You can’t live like that. You must put this [up] and sleep underneath.”
“It was a big help for us, in our work in the garden and on the house,” said Susan. “When [the tool kits] came, we shared them with individual families. They took them and went and rebuilt their kitchens and their houses. When they had finished with their houses, I said, ’Now our houses are finished, we must go to our gardens and work.’ They were so happy; they told me to pass on a huge thank you.”
