In Greek mythology, it is believed that Crete was the birthplace of Zeus, “King of the Gods” and sometimes called “Zeus Xenios,” which translates to “the protector of strangers.” He embodied the idea of caring for guests, and thus modeled the highest standard of hospitality for those who followed.
