Stations continued... Station 6: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus Formally, this image shares many similar strategies and symbols to the last Station I shared. But here, another subject comes into clearer view. Flying across the sky in the previous painting, this one, and another one that comes later is a Pan American plane. This particular airline was uniquely meaningful in spreading American soft power during the Cold War. In fact, wherever there were Americans or American interests, there was sure to be a Pan-Am plane. By 1970, there were at least five flights a week from the US to Saigon supporting the war effort. The last two pictures are of Pan American planes in Vietnam. The first is of “Pan Am B-707 Clipper Winged Racer”, the second is of two American soldiers chilling next to a Jeep and plane, both at SGN airport. See this and the others at @berlinbiennale
