William Kentridge directed one of the world’s most beloved European operas in 2005: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 1791 “The Magic Flute.” Kentridge brought the opera into an African context, conjuring Tamino’s training in “good and evil” as Enlightenment certainties that often impacted the colonial expansion of European countries. In preparation for the piece, Kentridge created a miniature theater with animated sequences from the opera playing projected onto the model stage. See this work alongside many others by the artist in William Kentridge: In Praise of Shadows through April 9, 2023. Get tickets at our link in bio! ____ William Kentridge, Preparing the Flute, 2005.
