'European Mask' 1990 by Filipino artist Pacita Abad is made by stuffing, stitching and covering canvas with paint, shells, buttons, beads and mirrors. πŸšπŸŽ€πŸ“ŽπŸ§΅βœ‚οΈ Part of a series that Abad began in the late 1970s, these quilted canvas works are the artist’s responses to the cultural traditions that she encountered during her travels in Asia, Africa and Latin America, although they also refer to vernacular traditions of sewing – a traditional part of family education in the Philippines. Abad calls the works 'trapuntos', from the Italian word for embroidery or quilt.⁣ The decorated surface integrates a range of patterning techniques to create a semi-figurative form with what looks like large eyes set in a stylised, mask-like face. ⁣ Find Abad's quilted creations on free display in 'Whose Tradition?' at @TateLiverpool.
