Finally announcing the 5 winners of the second DRABL artist grant.
Thank you to all that applied, 1050 people from 66 different countries submitted their work. I massively underestimated the amount of time it would take to work through all of these so thank you all for your patience also.
Thank you so much to music supervisor @whatupfatlip and to the 10 judges:
@kesewa.aboah @orfeot @_octa_ @thatboiakathatboi @mariaosadoo @duncan_loudon @zorasicher @mormor.mormor.mormor @lewisofman @tyronelebon
The winners, who will each receive a £2000 grant, are:
1. Valentin Noujaïm - an excerpt from ‘Pacific Club’, A film about a forgotten club under one of the towers of la Défense, the financial district of Paris. It was the first nightclub to welcome young Arab boys and girls from the suburbs, usually banned from Parisian nightclubs. For a decade, they danced under the glass and steel towers. They represented the first generation of sons and daughters of immigrants who dreamed of integrating into France but who came face to face with racism and the AIDS and heroin epidemics. @vnoujaim
2. Ode - ‘When Angels Speak of Love’, a series by Ode and Ibrahem Hasan inspired by the thirteenth chapter of the book All About Love by bell hooks. @bornalongaroad
3. Jonás Arenas - a clip from the music video for ‘Outro’ by his band Diles Que No Me Maten @no_me_maten
4. Sophie Kovel - ‘Too heavy for your sidewalk, 2022’ - Floral wrapping paper, sconce replicas of fixtures at the Metropolitan Republican Club, New York @sophiekovel
5. Taylor Simmons - ‘Big Feelings’ , ‘An Embrace’ & ‘What A Time’ - Acrylic, oil on canvas, 2021 @taytheism
