"Are these students going to refuse to treat patients who disagree with their beliefs?"
I saw a LOT of comments about this on Twitter - people saying that these @uofmichigan medical students standing up for their patients' right to access reproductive healthcare, somehow meant that they would refuse to treat a patient who held different beliefs. 😵💫😳🤔
That is literally the exact opposite of what they were doing. They were standing up for a patient's personal right to:
1) Autonomy in medical decision-making, free from the personal beliefs of their doctor. I may disagree with someone's decision, but it is THEIR decision to make about their own body.
2) Access to the standard of care in medicine, including complete and accurate counseling about risks, benefits, and alternatives. EVERY medical association having to do with OB/Gyn or reproductive health supports the right of patients to access safe abortion services in consultation with their doctor, and denounces legislative interference in this personal, MEDICAL decision.
This would be like protesting an anti-vaccine doctor, or one who is spreading misinformation about the pandemic. A doctor can have personal beliefs, but when they use their platform to promote beliefs that go against the overwhelming standard of medical care, that is the step too far. 🚫
