While spending the last 4 months on the road, I adopted a few habits and rules-of-thumb that helped me maintain a healthy routine while traveling. Here are a few of my top recommendations to start with — parts 2 & 3 will follow! 1. Skip taxis, Ubers, busses, etc. and instead opt for walking or renting a bike. Most cities have bike rental platforms, and a lot of hotels offer free bikes, as well. As long as you’re in a pedestrian or bike-friendly area, this is a great way to explore a new city while keeping your body moving and getting fresh air. 2. When searching for hotels and Airbnbs, filter for those with fitness centers. Setting yourself up with easy access usually makes you much more likely to hit the gym. 3. If you prefer to work out in your hotel room or guest house, try YouTube videos for programs you can do with limited space and equipment. My favorite channels are Lilly Sabri (HIIT and abs), Boho Beautiful (yoga and pilates) and Caroline Girvan (strength training and HIIT). Throughout this summer I rotated through these at least 3X per week. 4. Incorporate physical activities into your travel schedule, such as hiking, surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking... the list is endless! For example, in Colombia we visited La Piedra de Peñol for a day trip and climbed 600 stairs. While visiting Machu Picchu, we skipped the bus on the way up and opted for an intense stair climb. I took surf lessons in Costa Rica and went dancing in Cartagena. These were not only good calorie-burners, but they turned out to be some of the best memories from the trip. 5. Pack your own snacks so you always have something healthy on hand. I would find local health food stores to restock along the way, which are easy to find in most cities. Personally, I ALWAYS have nuts on hand, along with some sort of clean protein bars (Aloha brand is a great option). I often travel with packets of nut butters (with no added sugars) and superfood powder like Athletic Greens to mix with water first thing in the morning. I’ve been packing my own food bag for years and it has saved me from unhealthy choices time and time again! #traveltips #healthylifestyle #jetsetter #healthhacks #travelhack
