So, what do I do at work??!! I keep saying the work is non-profit but that can have many meanings, even in medicine. I work at an organization that provides subsidized care for low income families and their pets. The hospital functions as an ER so most of our cases come in as emergencies or urgent care. In addition to functioning as a hospital, the organization is also a shelter, practicing shelter medicine for stray/relinquished animals who then become adoptable animals. And lastly the organization investigates animal cruelty on a very high level. As part of that, we provide medical care for animals that are part of legal cases. I'm very lucky to be in a position where I see appointments one day (again, think ER intakes) and then on surgery another day (pyometra, FBOs, cystotomies, amputations, etc), treatments another day (out of OR wound treatments, unblockings, splint changes etc), dentals another day (we only see severe dental dz so pretty much full mouth extractions) and then even a shift with our cruelty recovery department another day. All in all, I'm in this incredibly hands-on position and oh man, I love every day of it. What questions do you guys have? Let me know! . . . . #veterinarymedicine #emergencyvet #nonprofitmedicine #animaladvocate #wearfigs #figsambassador #animalcare
