DECEMBER 21: Just in time for the holidays, the Portland Art Museum is proud to present Sandro Botticelli’s masterwork "Madonna of the Magnificat," a tondo (round painting) of the Virgin and Child with angels. Botticelli (1445–1510) was a leading artist of the Renaissance, a moment of tremendous creativity when artists and thinkers drew inspiration from the classical past and adopted a more humanistic approach. This rarely seen work is a variant of the artist’s most famous religious painting of the same name in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. It appears at the Museum on special loan from a private collector, presenting a rare opportunity for the public to experience this superb artwork by an icon of the Italian Renaissance. "Masterworks Portland: Botticelli" will be on view through May 14. 🖼 Sandro Botticelli (Italian, 1445–1510), "Madonna of the Magnificat," ca. 1483. Tempera, oil, and gold on wood panel; 24 3/4 in. diameter. Private collection [ID: Round oil painting of 5 figures in circular composition, angels at left and the Virgin Mary writing in a book with Christ Child on her lap.]
