After some time off, I decided to go through a few clips taken throughout the semester as a form of self-reflection. This is one of those excerpts that appears on almost every single orchestral audition. I’ve been working on this one for different auditions since 8th grade, and it’s still not even close to perfect. Listening back to my recording, I notice some air inconsistencies (accenting random notes) and sounding choppy at times. I have to think of using my articulation point as a light interruption, instead of moving and resetting my aperture. I need to exaggerate dynamic contrast more- especially when I’m recording on an iPhone. I’ve also always found it quite difficult getting through it in one breath... and it’s hard to find a place to breathe. I’ll probably be trying to figure all of this out forever, but practice makes some progress! It definitely sounds a lot better since starting it around 6 years ago!! Summer festival auditions are coming around too.
