We are happy to announce the opening of our Zhang Yuan Cafe—our third cafe in Mainland China—on December 1. Located in the heart of Zhang Yuan, this cafe’s design is inspired by the region’s Shikumen history. This area is home to the most iconic traditional Shikumen mansions in Shanghai. Shikumen represents the spiritual roots of Shanghai and Shanghainese, carrying the shared memories of native generations. To create our Zhang Yuan Cafe we collaborated with Neri & Hu Design and Research Office (@neriandhu) to reinterpret the details of life in Shikumen, allowing guests to recall their childhood while having an immersive experience in the cafe. The Zhang Yuan Cafe offers limited blends, scallion oil waffles, and other merchandise that pay tribute to the local history, and remind people of the heart-warming old days. Here, we intend to create an intimate and nostalgic experience and bring back the collective memories of “Home.” If you are in the area, stop in to experience this cafe built from heritage.
