[4/6] We've all heard of the ocean plastic catastrophe. But where is all that plastic actually coming from? π§
The bulk of it β 80% β starts its journey on land, from where it makes its way into waterways like rivers, which then carry the waste into the ocean. We also know that the source of the issue is pretty concentrated β most of the world's marine plastics originate from Asia (86%), driven by a rapidly growing population and waste collection and disposal systems that simply aren't keeping up.
Introducing the fourth start up from @oceanimpactorg's 2022 Impact Accelerator Program, @river_recycle . Established in Helsinki in 2019, River Recycle is on a mission to not only rid the world's waterways of plastic, but enable affected comunities to prosper from the solution under a clever waste-to-resource circular economy model β»οΈ
How it works: in a nutshell, the collected waste is processed by locally-employed workers, where itβs comprehensively sorted and re-sold as raw materials β meaning the entire solution can be implemented in communities free of charge. It literally pays for itself! πΈ
