(Repost @design.emergency) On May 7, 2022, a crowd of 47,000 people gathered in Barcelona to watch Gaudí’s legendary Casa Batlló come alive and reveal its memory in a phantasmagoria of imagery and sound, a “living architecture” installation by artist Refik Anadol and his team. Subsequently, the ‘Living Architecture: Casa Batlló’ NFT was auctioned by Christie’s in New York, and installed on public view at the same time at Rockefeller Plaza and on the fifth floor of Casa Batlló.
Whether it is a giant LED media wall, an immersive gallery––or airport––experience, the intimate contemplation on an individual screen, or a full-body projection onto a building, Refik’s goal is “to make the invisible visible by embedding media arts into architecture to create a new way to experience a living urban space,” he explains, by choreographing large collections of data and machine learning algorithms.
Datasets in Refik’s works are specific to the commission––whether it is Casa Battló, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the SALT foundation in Istanbul, the airport in Charlotte, North Carolina, or MoMA––and can be gathered from archives that run decades into the past or just scraped from a few days of records, and even based on live tracking. Sometimes they combine all of the above.
Our co-founder, Paola Antonelli, discussed with Refik Anadol the potential of NFTs and media to create a new type of public art and space. You can watch the conversation in @design.emergency’s video channel, shorturl.at/GKLW6
